An external hard drive that won’t show up is one of the most common issues we see, and the cause — and the fix — differ quite a bit between Windows and Mac. Here’s how to tell what’s going on before you risk making it worse.
On Windows
Open Disk Management (right-click the Start button → Disk Management). If the drive appears there but shows as “Unallocated” or has no drive letter, the hardware connection is fine and the issue is with the partition or file system — do not click “New Simple Volume” or format it, as this can wipe the existing data structure your files depend on. If the drive doesn’t appear in Disk Management at all, try a different cable, port, and computer before concluding it’s a hardware fault.
On Mac
Open Disk Utility and check “View → Show All Devices.” If the drive shows up greyed out or as an unmounted volume, avoid using “First Aid” until you’ve backed up or imaged the drive — First Aid can alter the file system in ways that complicate recovery on a drive that’s already having problems. Drives formatted for Windows (NTFS) sometimes don’t mount cleanly on a Mac by default, which can look like a failure when it isn’t one.
Signs it’s a physical problem, not a software one
- The drive isn’t recognized by any computer, on any port
- You hear clicking, grinding, or repeated spin-up/spin-down cycles
- The drive gets unusually hot or simply doesn’t spin at all
- It was recently dropped, knocked, or exposed to liquid
Any of these mean it’s time to stop troubleshooting yourself and get the drive assessed properly — continuing to power on a mechanically failing drive is the most common way people turn a recoverable fault into permanent data loss.
