- HDD recovery: Complexity usually comes from the type of mechanical fault. A drive that’s simply not detected but spins up fine is often more straightforward. A drive with a head crash or motor seizure needs to be opened in a controlled environment and may need donor parts, which adds time and cost.
- SSD recovery: Complexity comes from the controller and flash architecture. Every SSD brand and even different models from the same brand can use different controllers and chip layouts, so recovery often means reading raw data directly off the flash chips and reconstructing it — a more specialised, time-intensive process than most HDD cases.
- TRIM and encryption: Many modern SSDs and some newer HDDs use TRIM commands or built-in encryption. If TRIM has already run on deleted data, recovery chances drop sharply — this is one of the few situations where speed genuinely matters, so it’s worth switching the device off and getting it looked at as soon as you notice a problem.
- Physical damage: Water, fire, or a hard physical shock (a dropped external drive, for instance) adds complexity to either drive type, but for SSDs, if the flash chips themselves are cracked or burnt, options become very limited.

As a general pattern, straightforward HDD logical issues (accidental deletion, corrupted partition, drive not detected but mechanically sound) tend to be the least complex and least costly to resolve. Mechanical HDD failures with physical damage sit in the middle. SSD recovery, because of the controller-level work often required, tends to be more involved than an equivalent logical HDD case — though a simple SSD issue can still be quicker than a serious mechanical hard disk failure.
